BAKGRUNN (fra Kommisjonens pressemelding 24.06.2015)
Commission adopts proposal for a new European visa sticker
Today, the Commission adopted a Proposal for a Regulation on a new uniform format for visas. The current EU visa sticker is part of the common EU visa policy, including also the Visa Information System (VIS). Member States use the uniform format for visas when issuing visas. The objective of the Commission’s proposal is to fight fraud of visa stickers, which has significantly increased over the past few years. The visa sticker in its current design dating back to 1995 is outdated and a new design with better security features for the visa sticker was needed. At the same time, the Visa Information System - which is currently being put in place – includes the fingerprints of the visa applicant. After the full roll-out of the VIS, the visa sticker will still continue to be used for long stay visas (so called D-visa), which are not registered in the VIS. This proposal will now be transmitted to the Council and the European Parliament. After its adoption, the new European visa sticker will be applicable to all Member States and to the Schengen associated countries.
