BAKGRUNN (fra EFTA overvåkingsorgans pressemelding 14.12.2009, engelsk utgave)
The Authority carried out a planned mission to Norway from 7 to 11 September 2009 concerning the application of European Economic Area (EEA) legislation related to animal welfare on farms.
The overall conclusion is that animal welfare is given a high priority in Norway and that the inspection results are positive. The national legislation is sometimes even stricter than the minimum standards laid down in EEA legislation.
However, a certain number of shortcomings were identified by the mission team. These were mostly isolated incidents and the Norwegian food safety authority has informed the Authority of corrective actions already initiated.
The Norwegian food safety authority's reply to the draft report is annexed to the final report. For measures still outstanding, Norway is to notify the Authority of actions taken, within two months of receiving the final report.
