Consumers: Commissioner Kuneva unveils blueprint for future consumer policy
Speaking today at an event organised by the Lisbon Council, a Brussels-based policy think tank, Meglena Kuneva has taken stock of her tenure as European Consumer Commissioner and unveiled a vision document entitled "A Blueprint for Consumer Policy in Europe: Making Markets Work with and for People". Ms Kuneva's major priorities for consumer policy have included creating the Consumer Markets Scoreboard to monitor how specific markets are performing for consumers, boosting the enforcement of consumer law in partnership with a network of national enforcers, and initiating the Consumer Rights Directive, a proposal for a single set of simple EU-wide consumer rules. Some of the pillars of Kuneva's vision of the future are: further dismantling barriers to online trade, continued effective enforcement of existing consumer law, and putting in place a robust system of collective redress for consumers. Commissioner Kuneva's speech at the event was followed by a panel discussion with senior policy makers, consumer advocates and experts.
